After doing events that include a Dessert Dash over the years, there is one clear theme that appears in every dash – “did I choose wisely for my table?”
At fundraising events, there is no activity more frantic than the frenzied finale known as “The Dessert Dash.”
A feast for the eyes, the desserts are displayed in a pageantry lineup on pedestals as though waiting to be judged. Guests wander in, grab a drink and look over the options. You may know how this goes, tables are called up in order of their group bid totals, highest goes first and so on. Choices decrease rapidly as each table sends their fastest runner. However, the envoys for the later tables are tasked with excruciatingly difficult decisions. Psychology of opportunity is on full display by this point. It never fails, uncertain dashers gripping a cake while eyeing a pie! Is it simply fear of commitment? Indecisiveness? Is it the shame of letting down the table? Whatever it is, it cracks me up every time.
I like to make sure I’m at a good vantage point when it gets to this part of the event because, who knows, there could be a mishap where I end up licking frosting off my lens.
